Traditional sourcing of new software solutions falls into one of two categories: bespoke development, where the entire development is paid for and retained by the company seeking it, and third-party vendors, who license the use of the system to the company but retain all intellectual property rights to the software. With very few exceptions, only the first type adds value to the company’s assets because typical licensing means the source-code is rarely shared with the licensees and the technology is completely under the vendor’s control.
With this in mind ShiftForward created the ShiftForward Sponsored Development program, which allows you to significantly reduce the development costs by sharing with ShiftForward both the costs and the artifacts produced during the project, whilst retaining a full copy of the source-code as well as a License agreement that is a real asset in the company.
In general terms, the ShiftForward Sponsored Development means that ShiftForward retains all intellectual property over the resulting artifacts and the source-code is licensed to you with the express permission to change and adapt it as you wish. In practical terms, the difference between this and Exclusive IP is that you may not transfer (sell, copy, license, etc) the artifacts (code) unless you also transfer the License agreement with them to the new owner. The License itself, therefore, becomes your property and, along with a copy of the artifacts, a valued asset to your company.
